This is an important question asked by all patients. Well the answer is not so simple. The outcome of treatment depends on many factors like family history, extend of disease, types of vitiligo and body conditions. The result may vary from person to person. It all depends on the severity of disease. If the the progress of disease is not too much, there are chances of cure of this condition.
Well, the treatment in vitiligo can be divided in 2 parts, first, to control the disease, and second to restore the skin colour.
- Disease control – Disease control or arrest of progress of disease can be achieve by some topical and oral medications. These following medicines are helpful
- Topical steroids
- Pimecrolimus and Tacrolimus
- Topical Calcipotriol
- Melanin growth factors
- Skin colour restoration – once the disease progress is stopped, the re-pigmentation treatment starts. The skin color is induced by UVB light ( Called Photo-therapy- 311 nm) and the light source can be following
- Natural sunlight
- UVB Chambers ( See picture)
- UVB Lamps ( see picture)
- Excimer Laser and Excimer light
- Other associated treatments
- Psychological treatment
- Skin Camouflage
- Complete Skin Whitening therapy
The skin can be sensitize before exposure to sunlight and this can be achieved by psoralans ( like 8 methoxy psoralans).
This is a long process, takes 6months for few years. If this is failed then vitiligo surgery can be done on vitiligo areas.
- Protect your skin from sunlight, Try to avoid sunlight between 11am to 3pm, wear full clothing, use broad spectrum sunscreen.
- Apply good amount of moisturiser.
- Avoid trauma to the skin since traumatic area can turn white because of vitiligo activity.
