Vitiligo Surgery

Also known as ‘Leucoderma’ and ‘White Leprosy’, Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system of the body attacks the healthy cells, apparently affecting the body.

The disorder is characterized by white patches on the skin that develops as a result of melanocytes within the skin. These cells are responsible for the skin pigment, melanin that provides color to your skin. The white patches start to appear when the melanocytes die off.

The Procedure

Vitiligo, being a long-term problem affects people of any age group, gender, or ethnic group. During this disorder, growing patches of skin tend to lose their color.

Some key symptoms include:

  • Patchy areas of depigmentation start to appear on the skin. This generally occurs on those body parts that face sun exposure like hands, wrist, and facial areas.
  • The existence of white pigmentation on your skin that suddenly develops into similar white patches on the skin. This is when consulting a doctor turns mandatory.
  • The Vitiligo patches are often painless that do not even cause any sensation of itching. Though the sun’s exposure can cause irritation and even sometimes a burning sensation.

The technique is used to treat a small part of the body of the person affected by vitiligo. With the use of vacuum, the skin is divided into two equal parts—one with the white patches & the other normal skin. The skin with the color pigment is placed over the white patches. The melanocytes are responsible for bringing out the color of the skin.

In this procedure, the white patches are covered without any cut. By taking out the skin pigment from the normal part of the body is taken out and converted into a liquid form which is then inserted to the area of the skin with white patches.

After conducting skin biopsy, a small part of the skin is cultured in a specialized lab which is then grafted on the affected area.

It is one of the most popular treatments these days. After extracting plasma from the blood, it is treated and injected in the area with white patches. Plasma has stem cells that help in developing new cells in the body. This technique is natural and does not have any side-effects.

It’s difficult to predict how a patient will react or respond to Vitiligo treatment. It is important to keep in mind that no one treatment works for everyone. Results can vary from one part of the body to another. Combining two or more treatments often gives the best results.
