The fact is, hair loss is not a physical health concern. Rather, it can be considered emotional despite you embracing, shaving, or even treating it. Thus as per Dr. Jangid who is amongst the best hair loss specialist ( Trichologist )  in Delhi NCR, it’s suggested to consult a good doctor if hair loss is bothering you along with helping yourself with US FDA-approved medication.

Before hair loss, we should know what is hair cycle. There are phases during which the hair growth cycle in humans occur. Altogether, there are three phases, namely – Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen phase.

The anagen phase of the hair growth cycle is considered to be very active for growing hair. In fact, the phase can continue for years, lasting for 3- 5 years. While during the catagen phase, hair stops growing any further and gets separated from its follicle. The structure is available beneath the skin that holds the hair in place. The catagen phase is believed to last only for  few days, around 3 weeks or so. Lastly, the follicle rests for 2-3 months during the final phase, which is the telogen after which the hair falls out. The anagen phase again begins the moment new hair starts to grow in the same follicle.

hair cycle

Reportedly, people generally lose  80-100 hair per day as part of this natural cycle. If in any case this cycle is disrupted, it might end up damaging your hair follicle which might play a significant role in rapid hair loss than it’s regenerated. It can further lead to symptoms like a receding hairline, overall thinning, etcetera.

Hair loss which is also known as alopecia is a disorder that is created by an interruption in the body’s cycle of hair production. To be accurate, hair loss can occur on any part of your body, but the scalp is the most commonly affected area amongst all. On an average basis, the scalp has approximately 1,00,000 hairs that cycle through various periods of resting, growing, regenerating, and falling out.

Hair loss can be both temporary and permanent, depending upon the reason it’s occurring to you. It can be a sheer result of heredity, hormonal changes, disease and medical conditions where anyone can end up losing their hair, though being more common in men which is considered as baldness.

Normally, baldness refers to excessive hair loss from a person’s scalp. The most common cause of baldness can be considered as hereditary hair loss that comes with ageing. While some chose to let the hair loss run its course untreated being unaffected, others might cover it up with different techniques like hairstyles, makeup, scarves, or hats. Also, people do opt for professional treatment from an expert dermatologist to restrict further hair loss, thus restoring growth.

On an average basis, people tend to lose about 50 to 100 hair a day. It is usually never noticeable as new hair simultaneously grows at the same time, replacing the lost one. Hair loss starts to happen when new hair finds difficulty in growing, thus unable to replace the fallen out hair.

According to Dr. Jangid, one of the best dermatologist in Delhi NCR operating at SkinQure says that hair loss can typically be related to several factors like:

Family history: Hereditary condition is considered as the most common cause of hair loss both in men and women. The condition being called as androgenic alopecia results in male-pattern and female-pattern baldness respectively, affecting the scalp region.

Hormonal changes & medical conditions: There are a variety of conditions that can cause temporary or permanent hair loss, factors including hormonal changes, thyroid problems, menopause, alopecia areata, and others.

Supplements and medications: Hair loss can further occur due to the side effects of certain drugs used for medicinal purposes. Cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, etcetera are some of such conditions.

There are a number of factors that can surge the risk of getting hair loss. The list might include:

  • Family history of balding
  • Age
  • Stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Certain medical condition
  • Weight loss

Dr. Jangid, an Ex-Sr. AIIMS trained trichologist / Hair loss specialist carrying 10+ years’ experience states that hair loss can be visible in a lot of ways, completely depending upon the reason that’s causing it. It can be sudden or gradual, affecting just your scalp or the entire body.

Some of the common symptoms of hair loss include:

  • Androgenetic alopecia — Gradual thinning on top of the head
  • Alopecia areata — Circular, patchy bald spots
  • Telogen effluvium — Rapid loosening of hair after pregnancy, disease or medication
  • Stress Induced hair loss
  • Hair Loss because of chonic illness like thyroid, diabetes
  • scarring hair loss because of hair specific diseases

Types of Hair Loss

According to Dr. Jangid’s expertise, being the best skin and hair specialist in Delhi, he suggests that there are several types of hair loss that are classified on the basis of localization, affected area, patchy hair loss, or affected scalp factors.

Different types of hair loss include:

androgenic alopecia

Androgenic Alopecia

Also referred to as male pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia results in the majority of hair loss in men. To be clear, it can also occur in women as well, affecting them. Usually, it’s caused by a combination of hormones and genetics.

alopecia areata

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is not uncommon cause of hair loss. It’s been considered as an autoimmune condition that causes circular bald patches to appear on the scalp along with the other hair-bearing areas. When alopecia covers your entire scalp, it’s termed as alopecia totalis whereas if it spreads to the rest of the body, it’s called as alopecia universalis.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a temporary hair fall condition which is because of any acute illness like fever, jaundice, medication, pregnancy. Hair loss occur typically after 2-3 months of illness. Doctor diagnose this condition and treat appropriately.

Scarring alopecia

Scarring alopecia

This kind of hair loss occurs over because of any disease which can damage hair root. The primary treatment of scarring alopecia is to control the disease process and save hair. A precise diagnosis is must for every hair condition to treat it properly. The damaged area can be managed by hair transplant.
