Hair is considered as the “crowning glory” for every woman. While for a woman it is extremely precious, it enhances a man’s personality too. Both men and women start facing hair loss issues as they age. Though the causes might be several, its early analysis is a must to prevent the damage. Dr. Jangid who is an experienced and professional Dermatologist can guide any hair loss sufferer in the most effective and best manner. Penning down some excerpts from his experience.

Androgenic alopecia:

Androgenic alopecia, also known as “male pattern baldness” and “female pattern baldness,” is among the most common causes of hair loss. This is a genetic disorder. So if one has a family history then there are chances that one can inherit it. In both men and women, it is attributed to the presence of male hormones (androgens) around the hair follicles, which further can adversely affect hair growth. Further, after menopause, when women have lesser female hormones they are more prone to developing androgenic alopecia. Androgenetic Alopecia is essentially not a disease, it is a genetic trait. Medical treatment consists of the application of Minoxidil solution and Oral anti-androgen therapy. Procedural treatments like Non-surgical treatments and Low-Level Light Therapy also have an established role to play. In advance cases, Hair transplantation procedure is often required.

Alopecia areata

: Alopecia areata typically presents with the sudden appearance of few temporary bald patches on the scalp. The phenomenon of hair loss is a part of an immune system problem where the body’s natural defenses attack its own tissue by mistake. And unfortunately, once the hair has fallen out in certain spots, the new growth of hair is suppressed for the coming weeks. This type of alopecia sometimes affects people who have other “autoimmune” diseases like thyroid disease, lupus, or pernicious anemia. This type of alopecia can be treated effectively in most cases by a dermatologist with the help of applicable (topical), oral or injectable medicines.

Telogen effluvium

: Hair grows in phases which are known as the Hair growth cycle. Telogen hair is that hair that is in the shedding phase. Telogen effluvium is the type of hair loss that occurs because of a large amount of hair cycling into the resting (telogen) state.  Telogen effluvium is often associated with systemic illnesses, stress, trauma, surgery, postpregnancy state, nutritional deficiencies, use of some medications, etc. Fortunately, this type of alopecia usually improves on its own after several months. Sometimes, it may persist for more than 6 months when it is known as Chronic Telogen Effluvium.

Scalp infection

: A large number of infectious agents can cause infection and hence damage to hair follicles. Bacteria can cause folliculitis/furunculosis leading to damaged hair follicles. Fungi can cause Tinea Capitis/Ringworm or kerion which affect hair follicles. Parasitic infestations like lice are common but can only rarely cause hair loss. Most of these infections would result in patchy hair loss (limited to sites of infection). Maintaining good hygiene of the scalp can prevent a lot of these infections. In case one is suffering from certain scalp infection, he/she would need specific medical treatment under a dermatologist’s supervision to treat it.

Autoimmune diseases like lupus

:  Lupus refers to a chronic multisystem autoimmune condition. It can lead to both scarring and non-scarring types of hair loss. Scarring type usually manifests as red, crusted bald patches of abnormal textured skin on the scalp. This is mostly irreversible. Treatment is aimed at stopping the progress of disease activity. Non-scarring type of hair loss is mostly characterized by diffuse thinning and loss of density of hair. Lupus needs to be correctly recognized by a dermatologist and treated appropriately under medical supervision.

Thyroid problem

: Severe and prolonged hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause loss of hair. The type of hair loss involves the entire scalp rather than discrete areas and the hair appears uniformly sparse.  Hyperandrogenic states (Increase in the male type of hormones) in women can cause Patterned Baldness. The most common is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Even normal hormonal upheavals (like that during and post-pregnancy intervals) can cause hair loss.

Diabetes

: The main causative factor behind Diabetes Mellitus is Insulin Resistance. Insulin resistance can cause fluctuations in other intricately related hormones which can trigger hair loss. In females, Insulin resistance is also associated with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Diabetes Mellitus can also cause microvascular abnormalities leading to poor blood circulation to hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Diabetic patients are also more prone to develop alopecia areata. Lifestyle measures like a healthy/balanced diet and regular physical exercise to maintain a healthy body mass index are important to keep diabetes under check. Visit a dermatologist and physician/endocrinologist for appropriate guidance and treatment.

Nutritional deficiency

: Nutritional deficiency may impact both hair structure and hair growth. Studies have reported potential associations between nutritional deficiency and chronic TE, androgenetic alopecia (AGA), female pattern hair loss (FPHL), and alopecia areata (AA). Studies have also found that low serum ferritin (Storage Iron) is more prevalent in patients with chronic TE, FPHL, AGA, and AA. Apart from these macronutrient deficiencies like Protein, Energy, Malnutrition and Essential Fatty Acids deficiency can cause a diminution for both quality and number of hair. A well-balanced diet often suffices most nutritional deficiency associated hair loss. In certain diseased states, medical supplementation is required after a thorough evaluation by a dermatologist.

Vitamin deficiency

: Several Vitamin deficiencies have been associated with hair loss – Vitamin B-1, Vitamin B-12, Biotin, Vitamin C and Vitamin D. Again, a well-balanced diet often suffices most nutritional deficiency associated hair loss. The rapidly changing and hectic lifestyle of people is becoming one of the prime factors behind the rapid rise of hair loss issues in India.
